BUILD Research Network

Call for Mentors & Mentees

The BUILD Research Network is launching a mentoring program that pairs early-career academics working on housing, energy and transportation infrastructure, and land-use decisions with senior faculty in those fields. The mentoring program is one part of BUILD’s work to grow the next generation of researchers working on these issues.

Matches are for one year. We pair people based on academic discipline and research interests, and what each mentee says they need.

What we ask of mentors

  • Meet with your mentee at least once per quarter for a one-hour conversation.
  • Introduce your mentee to at least one professional contact in your network who would be helpful for them to know.
  • Read and provide peer review comments on at least one article-length publication.
  • Offer other professional advice during the quarterly conversations, and through other communication, as the two of you agree.

Mentors receive a $1,000 honorarium for the one-year commitment.

What we ask of mentees

  • Schedule the quarterly conversations and come to each one prepared with specific questions or material to discuss.
  • Follow up on the introduction your mentor makes and let your mentor know how it went.
  • Send your manuscript at least four weeks before the conversation where you want to discuss it, with a short note on the kind of feedback that would be most useful.
  • Be direct about what you need, and mindful of your mentor’s time between conversations.

Who is eligible

  • Mentees: PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career researchers and faculty.
  • Mentors: Mid-career to senior faculty and researchers with an established record in housing, energy and transportation infrastructure, or land use.

Mentors and mentees both need to be BUILD affiliates. You can JOIN THE NETWORK by completing the registration form. Affiliating is free and takes just a few minutes.
